Cover Wars is a weekly feature of two different covers in a sort of battle. Whichever cover wins the more votes in the week will win the battle and move on to next week where it will face a new cover. It's a fun feature with the point being to highlight some great covers for upcoming or recent titles, and also to discuss what is liked in a cover.

Last week, Ashes and Ice won over Let the Sky Fall. The poll was extremely close with just one vote separating the two. This week, Ashes and Ice by Rochelle Maya Callen is up against a new cover; Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge.

Here its is, the classic battle between red and blue. Deep variations of both colours are found on these covers, as well as some exceptionally pretty font. Both covers are so distinctive. I love the rose and staircase design of Cruel Beauty, I think that is very clever. Ashes and Ice does a fantastic job of bringing the 'ice' to the reader with the frost which I think was very well done.

Which cover should win Cover Wars?

I started Cover Wars on my old blog Tantalizing Illusions years ago. (It's a little scary now that I can claim that.) It was a success: people truly seemed to enjoy this friendly competition featuring two beautiful covers. People voted happily for their favourite covers and it was a lot of fun. I've decided to carry that with me to The Sirenic Codex. Cover Wars will be much more consistent here with Mari helping out and I hope everyone enjoys it.

For those of you new to this, here's how it works. Two covers: one that is defending its claim, one that is challenging. You have one week to vote for any cover on this original post poll or on the side bar poll (it doesn't matter which). The cover with the highest votes gets to move on and defend its position against a newer cover. 

At the end of the year, I will do a tally of which covers held on the longest. Three weeks is usually excellent for a cover with a month being almost unheard of. If you have a suggestion for a cover, you can post it in the comments or email us. However, this is NOT meant to be a promotion tool. If a cover makes it onto Cover Wars, that's because I genuinely thought it was gorgeous. So not every cover suggested will make it onto Cover Wars. Also, in the past this has become quite heated up. While I love that so many people genuinely cared which cover won, this is a friendly competition with literally nothing at stake except maybe some bragging rights.

Now that you understand the rules, let's look at these beautiful new covers.  Since I'm starting a new chain, there is no defending cover this week.

Two very striking covers with opposing colour palettes: cold, dark blue vs. warm auburn/orange. These covers draw the eye and one thing they both excel at is typography. Both fonts seem to fit the covers perfectly. Which do you prefer? Vote now!
