The Best and Worst Commercials

I was watching TV and it came to mind that commercials are an art: either you like them, and will buy their product, or hate them, and refuse to support the organization with the awful commercial.

This is just for fun, but I picked some of my favourite and least favourite commercials. Oh, and I'm not being paid for this. I just really want to rant about the awful commercials out there.

First, this one.

I mostly watch TV for sporting events, and this commercial is pretty common. I love it. Especially during the intermission of an NHL game, I imagine this is what goes on in the locker rooms and it pumps me up for the next period! Plus, it's funny. My sister and I end up screaming the yeahs with the team, and I just love it. Well done, Netflix.

This next video is some pretty awful quality, and I forgive you if you don't watch it because this one is godawful.

OH my gawd make it stop. It's on like two times every commercial break, and it makes me want to punch something. Stop saying "whaaaaaat" it's so annoying. I don't even care that the goddamn Egg McWhatever is 290 calories. I DON'T CARE MacDonalds and I will never eat your food again because your commercial makes me feel stabby. Please, take it off the air.

Okay, now on to a commercial I love. Again, I watch a lot of sports, so this one stands out. I love the attitude behind it. It was during the NHL lockout where everyone was in a piss-poor mood because billionaire owners and millionaire players weren't able to cooperate in time to start the season.

The Russia part is especially funny. "I'd rather not, but I will." Canada isn't as hockey-crazed as this commercial would have you think, but I think the strength in Nike's commercial is appealing to Canadians patriotism. Plus, there are some pretty famous players there and it's a bit of a "screw you" to the owners, so why not?

Next on my annoying list is Wendy's girl. She's probably nice, but the commercials they force on her are ridiculous. The fire one is the new one going around it's annoying, but the following commercial is really even worse.

*dies* Why is this on my TV. It is so uncomfortable when you have kids around and you don't know how much they understand. This isn't funny. It's irritating. Go away Wendy's. Haven't they learned yet that in Canada, all our commercials are emotional in some way?

Check out this one. Tim Horton's does a bunch of commercials ranging from annoying, but kind of cute (the Hi! one comes to mind) but this one is awesome. But really, commercials aren't supposed to make you sad, right?

*tears* A huge part of the Canadian population are immigrants, so this commercial hits hard. When I came, I was three and I remember being given a jacket and going through the airports. Anyway, it's sweet, and it's a little weird how Tim Hortons has integrated themselves into Canadian identity. Hm.

I'll end with a commercial I like. I was really tempted to put in one of the #AllIceIsHomeIce or #WeAreWinter commercials from Team Canada, but I don't know how appealing those are to a wider audience. They are awesome, albeit typically sport commercials. Instead, I'll leave with BelVita whose food I've never tried, but they have this adorable commercial. Some might find it annoying, but I love it! The actress reminds me of Carly Rae Jepsen a little.

So that's pretty much it. I don't know how much of an appetite there is for this kind of random post on TSC, but it was fun for me and I hope you guys enjoyed it! Any other commercials you like? Or hate?

  1. My family is tired of my rants about the Ikea commercial where the husband and wife are furniture shopping and then the guy tells the wife "Go get some frozen yogurt, honey, I've got this" and then he hands her shopping list to some random Ikea employee and tells HIM to pick everything out. And then the husband probably starts creepily spying on women shopping at Victoria's Secret or something while his wife thinks he is picking things out for her.
She needs to go find a new husband, someone like the Tim Horton guy!

  2. Haha the only ones we see in America are the McDonald's and Wendy's ones. (Fast food -- of course. :P)

    1. I figured a lot of these wouldn't be found in America. From what I've seen because I have some American channels on satellite, Geico commercials are truly awful. But then again, you guys do get wicked awesome Superbowl commercials that are blocked out here.

  5. Canadian Netflix sucks. I'd have to get a VPN or some kind of DNS scrambler if I wanted to watch the shows I like. I usually just watch tv for specific events, usually sporting events, or during dinner. My family kind of gathers in the living room and everyday we have this ritual of picking something to watch. I'm still going to watch TV until sports are streamed!
