They All Fall Down fell last week to the popular cover of Mortal Danger. This week the champion is back to face Kiss, Kill, Vanish by Jessica Martinez.
Mortal Danger caught many voters attention last week with it's rough and edgy cover. The cover manages to have a little bit of softness as long with the rough. The bleeding infinite is rough but then the cursive typography of the title softens it up a bit. The cover is also rid of much colour. On the other hand, Kiss Hill Vanish is filled with colour. The background is quiet and almost sad because of the models pose but the title stands out with a splash of colour behind it instantly catching the readers attention.
So, which'll it be? Let the Cover Wars begin!
I voted for Mortal Danger again, I like how simple but creepy it is!
ReplyDeleteI adore that infinity sign. Something about the flowing ribbon of blood is just too pretty. ;)

Oh Kiss, Kill, Vanish looks sick...in a good way!
ReplyDeleteIt looks trippy! I'm always a proponent of high contrast and the neon colours are always fun.

Unfortunately, your link for Mortal Danger vs. They All Fall Down was faulty. It took a voter to last week's contest against Unravel and those votes for TAFD were not counted correctly for the current contest. Why do you allow voting to continue on past contests?? If all the incorrect votes for They All Fall Down were directed to the proper contest, it would have beaten Mortal Danger.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie,
DeleteYou're right, you've realized a flaw in our system. It's something we try to deal with as fairly as possible, but there is always the possibility of some errors.
The first thing to know is that neither Mari nor I post anything manually. We usually do our posts via blogger's "scheduled post" option, which means that in the morning (what we've determined to be the best time to post in terms of page views), Cover Wars is posted without TSC being updated. Mari usually does the post very quickly late at night and we can't have the header image and sidebar poll without the actual post, so it's usually left there until we get back from school and one of us adjusts the blog.
You're right that this can cause issues, but as long as you visit the new Cover Wars post there's nothing wrong. The poll in the post is completely accurate, and any links through Twitter will lead to the post so again, people can vote through the right poll.
Now, you asked us why we didn't close the poll: frankly, that's because we can't. We've messed around with the system numerous times trying to figure out a good poll option that works with our template. Blogger's polls seem to conflict with our template, and if you look back at the early Cover Wars you'll see we tried quite a few before we stuck with Pollcode, as the simplest and most effective method. So it's not a matter of us allowing this- ideally, everyone would vote on the right poll, and the poll would close at some point. It's just the reality that we haven't found a way to limit the days. If you know of a poll widget we can use, we would be completely open to trying it out.
Cover Wars is a flawed system, but the other part of it is that the competition is mostly just for fun. There's really nothing to be gained for it other than us showcasing a couple of covers every week, and then doing a yearly round up of the most "winningest" covers. There are no prizes, and frankly, before Mari took over, I would post Cover Wars on different days depending on when I had time to do it. Mari has done a fantastic job with the feature and posting it on a consistent basis. So, the system is flawed, but I think the overall point of Cover Wars is not who wins or loses, but just to showcase some stunning covers.
Thanks for letting us know of your concerns Laurie, and I hope I explained to you a little of why we do it the way we do it. It's nice to see that people really like your feature, and care for it. We're also always looking for feedback, so if you have any ideas for how to improve Cover Wars, feel free to comment or email us.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! (And sorry for the monstrously long post :p)

I went for Mortal Danger! Kiss Kill Vanish has an... interesting cover, but it kind of seems all over the place, while Mortal Danger has this creepy-elegant vibe to it. =)

It is beautiful. I bet it looks even better in hardcover :)

I especially love the cover for Kiss Kill Vanish! It's so colorful and it makes me intrigued to find out more about it :) I think the cover for Mortal Danger is kind of creepy, although I'd probably still read it.
ReplyDeleteMortal Danger is creepy but a good creepy, the type that makes you want to pick up the book. As for Kiss Kill Vanish, it's a really beautiful cover that's light and dark at the same time.

I picked Mortal Danger-I love the colors for KKV but Mortal Danger conveys creepiness better.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Fans of creepy but pretty --> Mortal Danger it is :)

They are both SO awesome in their own ways because they are very different from each other. I voted for Kill Kill Vanish because of all the colors but I like how simple Mortal Danger is.
ReplyDeleteI agree. In a way though even KKV is simple but the colours bring it to life while MD's infinite sign captures and holds our attention.

kiss kill vanish appeals to me more. i like the burst of color with the black and white in the foreground. i want to read both though. thanks for commenting on my The Immortal Rules ramblings. :)

The burst of colour really attracts me to the cover. It's a stunner. Thanks for your wonderful post, we love reading them.

Ha! Is this even a question? :D I love Kiss Kill Vanish since it's so colourful and I love that one more than the creepy infinity one. I agree that the cursive makes it softer and more interesting, but still. *covers her eyes* this is creepy :____:
ReplyDeleteHaha! Sorry about the creepiness :) KKV's colours really make that cover and I'm glad you liked it!

oooohhhh this is so hard!!!! I feel like the splash of colour in Kiss Kill Vanish is more visually appealing digitally, but that the simplified, yet eerie, paperish background of Mortal Danger would look incredible as a paperback...
