How I Acquire Books

Day 6 of April's awesome Book Blogger Challenge.

Day 1 was about listing my 15 bookish confessions.
Day 2 was about my bedtime reading ritual.
Day 3 was about blogger BFFs.
Day 4 was about the last book I flung.
Day 5 was about tearjerkers.

Day 6 is about how I shop for books.

I'm broke right now so I don't shop for books. The library is my best friend. These days, there are two ways I pick books. Either I decide that I'm going to be insanely lazy so I sit at the computer and open up the library's e-catalogue. They have a pretty good selection so I pick 3-4 books from there.

I volunteer at the library and there are meetings I need to attend once a month. So usually, this is the day when I decide not to be lazy and go look around to see what's on the shelves. I used be such a proactive reader and request every title I wanted to read then pick it up from the library. I realized later that most books that I want are inside the library.

So, I'll walk around and browse the shelves. My phone is an absolute must while doing this. Before I pick up any book, I scan it on Goodreads to read a few reviews and check the overall average star rating. Who says Goodreads/reviews don't help you pick up books?

The other way I acquire books is if I'm unable to access my computer or the library. I always have a phone with me so I use the Google Play store and browse Google Play Books. I usually pick some of their free books. They have a collection of classics that I suppose aren't too bad. I don't read books on my phone; this process usually happens if I'm desperate for something to read.

That's my process. What's yours?

  1. We usually know which books we're interested well in advance of their release, so we try to set money aside, save up for them.

For books that we truly shop for -- like, in a store, on a whim -- we usually browse covers, read blurbs.

    1. That's what I do when I buy books too! I usually buy absolute favourites. My family has caught on and have begun to give me lots of gift cards as presents.

  2. I don't have a cell phone, but that's a great idea to look up books on Goodreads from the library.

    1. I'm probably overly attached to my cellphone. I use it for everything.

  3. I thought I was the only one that covertly checked my phone when browsing for books! I still think it's a great trick. For me, if it's a book I really want, I usually use the library online hold system to have it held in advance.

    1. I do the same. If I'm lucky though, some of my friends will have the book I'm dying to read. The really popular books will get upwards of 500 requests so it takes about a year to six months to get them... and who really wants to wait that long? ;P

  4. I mostly use my library and e-ARCs courtesy of Netgalley and Edelweiss-I can't afford to buy all the books I want so these are excellent resources for me.
