What's the last book you flung across the room?
Confession: I don't throw books. I get angry with books but I can't bring myself to actually throw the book. That's sacrilege, isn't it?
However, there is one book that was almost the exception. A book I put very firmly on the ground and then walked away from and ranted to my mom who ignored me, so then I went and wrote a completely nasty, scathing review, and then I felt bad again and decided this review would never see the light of day.
This book stands out as one of the most upsetting I've ever read because it's been almost a year and it's still the first book I think about when this topic came up.
*shudders*
You see, I was so super duper excited for Nightshade, and I enjoyed it. I even gave it 5 stars on Goodreads! Then they changed the covers and I didn't like them too much, but that couldn't stop me from devouring Wolfsbane. I didn't like Wolfsbane as much, but it still got a very solid 4 stars. Bloodrose, however, was a complete disaster. I loathed this book.
Now if you haven't read this series and are planning to, I suggest you skip this next part. It's very spoilery.

My absolute favourite character in this series was Ren. If you've read Bloodrose, you understand right away why I'm upset. Ren had personality. He was honourable and very flawed, but in general he was the perfect bad boy. He challenged Calla and I adored him. I thought they would be a great match but of course that doesn't happen. Because Calla is all undecided, so she would flirt with both boys.
I was disgusted. Sure she felt guilty, but you don't just flip flop boys like that. Especially when one guy is awesome like Ren, and the other guy is possibly the most annoying love interest ever. Shay was whiny and irritating and I couldn't stand him at all.
Worst of all, Calla never actually chose who she wanted to be with because Ren was killed in a brutal, abrupt, and awful fashion and Calla grieved for like 5 minutes before moving on. Also, she got a happily ever after.

An author should be applauded when she creates a character readers care deeply about. However, she should realize that she can't grossly mistreat this character without alienating her readers.
Obviously, I was very upset with Bloodrose. Anyone else have a book like that?

I have read so many reviews where people agreed with your spoiler; I didn't care too much but was astonished by the vehemence with which people expressed that opinion.
ReplyDeleteIt all goes back to how much you like the character. I loved Ren a lot. Book characters aren't real people, but you can truly connect with them. So I didn't react well when one of my favourite characters was awfully treated. I also started to hate Calla for her treatment of Ren too... everyone's passionate about different things, I guess.
